Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 lbs. (567 g) beef, diced into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 Tbsp (15 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp (30 ml) honey
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp (22.5 ml) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp (15 ml) rice vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp (1.25 ml) toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) peeled and minced fresh ginger
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) peeled and minced fresh garlic (2 cloves)
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onions, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Warm up vegetable oil in a 12-inch non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Place the beef cubes in the pan and allow them to sear on one side for about 3 to 4 minutes, then turn them over and cook until the internal temperature reaches approximately 160 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 3 more minutes.
  3. As the beef cooks, combine soy sauce, beef broth, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and cornstarch in a small bowl or measuring cup, whisking them together thoroughly.
  4. Pour the sauce over the cooked beef and keep cooking and stirring until the sauce becomes thick, which should take an additional 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Serve hot, adding a sprinkle of green onions and sesame seeds on top if you prefer.

Notes

  • Marinate chicken in soy sauce mixture for enhanced flavor before cooking.
  • Control saltiness by using low-sodium soy sauce and beef broth.
  • Adjust sweetness with honey and brown sugar to your taste.
