Description

A homemade version of the classic General Tso’s chicken featuring crispy fried chicken pieces in a flavorful sweet and savory sauce, perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3-4 dried red chilies
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • Green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Mix cornstarch and flour in a bowl. Dip each chicken piece into the beaten eggs and dredge in the flour mixture.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat and fry the coated chicken pieces until golden brown and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet, sauté dried red chilies until fragrant, then add the sauce mixture and bring to a simmer.
  5. Add the fried chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.

Notes

For a lighter version, consider baking the coated chicken at 400°F for about 25 minutes instead of frying.
