Description
A homemade version of the classic General Tso’s chicken featuring crispy fried chicken pieces in a flavorful sweet and savory sauce, perfect for weeknight dinners.
Ingredients
- 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs, beaten
- Oil for frying
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 3-4 dried red chilies
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- Green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Mix cornstarch and flour in a bowl. Dip each chicken piece into the beaten eggs and dredge in the flour mixture.
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat and fry the coated chicken pieces until golden brown and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
- In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.
- Heat oil in a skillet, sauté dried red chilies until fragrant, then add the sauce mixture and bring to a simmer.
- Add the fried chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.
- Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
Notes
For a lighter version, consider baking the coated chicken at 400°F for about 25 minutes instead of frying.
