Description
A comforting dish of ground chicken baked with marinara sauce, mozzarella, and crispy breadcrumbs.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon salt (divided in half)
- 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
- 2 pounds ground chicken
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 770 mL marinara sauce (1 jar Rao’s)
- 1 cup grated parmesan
- 2 sprigs basil
- 1½ to 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- In a small skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add panko breadcrumbs, ¼ teaspoon salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning; stir until golden, then set aside.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat, add diced onion and sauté until translucent (3-4 minutes). Add chopped garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground chicken, ½ teaspoon salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano; mix until well incorporated.
- Add the ground chicken mixture to the skillet, breaking up the meat as it cooks (6-8 minutes until no longer pink).
- Pour in the marinara sauce and stir; let simmer for 5 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a baking dish, layer the chicken and marinara mixture, sprinkle with parmesan, then layer mozzarella on top, and finally, add toasted breadcrumbs.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Notes
Let the dish rest for a few minutes after baking to allow flavors to settle.
