Description

A delightful Char Siu chicken recipe that blends sweet and savory flavors, perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup honey (may substitute with maple syrup)
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce (mix soy sauce with sugar if unavailable)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (use tamari for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 teaspoon warm spices (five-spice powder; or replace with ginger and garlic to taste)
  • 4 pieces skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional garnish)
  • 2 stalks green onions (can substitute with chives)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and warm spices until well combined. This will be the marinade for your chicken.
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are well coated. Allow them to marinate for at least 15 minutes — longer if you have time.
  3. Preheat your grill or oven to medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the chicken thighs for about 6-8 minutes per side or until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F if grilling. If baking, arrange the chicken thighs in the baking dish and pour any remaining marinade on top. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.
  5. Remove the chicken from the grill or oven. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  6. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

Consider marinating the chicken overnight for a more pronounced flavor explosion. Using a meat thermometer can help ensure tenderness.
