Ingredients
- 1/3 cup (80 ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) soy sauce, or as needed
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) fish sauce
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) white sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 pound (450 g) skinless, boneless beef thighs, coarsely chopped
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) sliced shallots
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) minced Thai chilies, Serrano, or other hot pepper
- 1 cup (240 ml) very thinly sliced fresh basil leaves
- 2 cups (480 ml) hot cooked rice
Instructions
- Collect all necessary components.
- Combine beef broth, oyster sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, white sugar, and brown sugar in a bowl, mixing until fully combined.
- Place a large skillet over high heat and add oil. Introduce the beef, stirring until it turns from pink to brown, around 2 to 3 minutes.
- Incorporate shallots, garlic, and minced chilies into the pan. Continue cooking on high until the liquid begins to caramelize at the bottom, approximately 2 to 3 minutes more.
- Add roughly a tablespoon of the prepared sauce to the skillet; stir and cook until the sauce starts to caramelize, which should take about a minute.
- Pour in the remaining sauce. Stir and cook until it deglazes the pan’s bottom. Keep cooking until the sauce coats the beef, another 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.
- Mix in the basil leaves. Cook and stir until the basil is wilted, about 20 seconds. Pair with rice.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your meal!
Notes
- Ensure the chicken thighs are roughly chopped for even cooking.
- Adjust soy sauce amount to suit your preferred level of saltiness.
- Use fresh basil for optimal flavor and fragrance; adjust chili peppers cautiously for desired spiciness.
