Description

Delightful squares featuring flaky puff pastry, rich vanilla custard, and fluffy whipped cream.


Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Cut it into squares, about 2×2 inches in size.
  3. Place the pastry squares on the prepared baking sheet. Use a fork to poke several holes in each square.
  4. Bake the pastry for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool on a wire rack.
  5. In a saucepan, combine the whole milk, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks over medium heat. Stir continuously until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow it to cool slightly.
  7. In a large mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled custard.
  8. When the pastry has cooled, slice each square in half horizontally. Fill the bottom half with a generous amount of the vanilla custard cream and replace the top half.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar for an elegant touch, if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using homemade vanilla extract or vanilla bean. Garnish with fresh berries or mint leaves for an enhanced presentation.
